TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH Jakarta) invited Governor Anies Baswedan in a meeting upon discussing the implementation of Supreme Court’s (MA) ruling to stop the city’s water privatization.
LBH Jakarta Lawyer Nelson Nikodemus Simamora said that an official invitation will be sent to the Governor and other litigants such as the president, Finance Ministry, the Jakarta Council (DPRD Jakarta), and city-owned water company PAM Jaya.
“We will invite the governor to discuss the implementation of the ruling on February 4,” said Nelson at the LBH Jakarta headquarters on Sunday, January 20. He said that it will hopefully reclaim the city’s water management back to the government.
The government initially permitted the privatization through a water privatization cooperation agreement ratified on June 6, 1997. Fourteen Jakarta residents filed a lawsuit against the privatization of drinking water back on November 21, 2012, demanding governor Anies Baswedan to put an end to the water privatization.
